III. The Isaiah Soule Bible
Background on Isaiah C Soule
Donated by Elizabeth (Soule) Payne

"I am a new member of Soule Kindred and was so excited to receive your Soule Newsletters. I first became interested in my Soule genealogy back in 1976. Unfortunately, I didn't have too much to go on back then, but thanks to the marvel of new technology and my computer, was able to recently find LOTS of new Soule cousins and confirm what had been rumored, that I am indeed related to 'Pilgrim George'.

As 'collector' of antique dolls (though I consider my self to be more of preservationist and caretaker) I have a true love and appreciation for the conservation of family relics and heirlooms. These items and family writings are an important part of our heritage, and I believe must be protected for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

It was with much distress that I found a Soule Bible from 1817 being put to auction on Ebay. I was the lone bidder up until a day or two before the auction ended when another contender placed a larger bid. I emailed this bidder to find out if he/she was also a 'Soule'...if so, GREAT...but unfortunately, this bidder was from a web-site that buys old bibles, uses the information (ok, so much so good), but also appeared to remove and sell the various pages and components of the Bible piece-meal at a cost (of course). I couldn't see this happening to the Bible, so I bid it up and BOUGHT IT! It is WONDERFUL old (and I mean old!!) Bible which includes marriage, birth and death information. Some of the old writing has faded and is hard to make out, but the Bible belonged to 'Isaiah C. Soule', born Oct. 24, 1787. He married Fanny Haskins (born 9-8-1791) on Nov 24, 1822. Other names mentioned are Orman H. Soule (b. 8-25-1826, Adella (?) Ann Soule (b. 7-31-1856), and more names mentioned.

The Bible also has many ferns and flowers pressed between the pages long ago, wonderful old biblical etchings (steel plates??) and a few newspaper clippings about the death of (another) 'Fanny Alden' who died at the age of 97 in 1925. The surname of "Smith" is also listed among the family record. The person I bought this Bible from was in Wisconsin. Some places listed in the obituary for 'Grandma Alder' are 'North New Salem', 'Montague' and 'North Prescott', but no state is mentioned.

I would LOVE to see the Bible get back into the hands of a direct line of Isiah C. Soule if any are still alive. If not, I would like to donate it at some time in the future to a library worthy of receiving and preserving this relic. Any suggestions? I am writing this to you with hopes that you could include all or any part of this email in your Newletter..or spread the word about this Bible.

Your cousin,
Elizabeth Soule Payne"
