XXXIV, NO. 1 JANUARY, 2000 News from President Bob Bishop Suspension of Genealogy Research Ends Internet communication on Soule family history through reference to our Soule Kindred Library has been restored after a suspension of about two months. During that period, our Family Historian Charles "Jack" Sowles has changed his E-mail address and carrier to twolions@shawneelink.com. SK Web Page to Change Location Web Master Ruth Hall reports that she is in the process of changing all of her web pages from the Geocities facility to Rootsweb. The present Soule Kindred web page is at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6431/SKsooulekindred.html. It has had 737 visitors in 1999. The new address under Rootsweb is not yet known. If in the next few weeks you find the Geocities address is not functioning, query Ruth at ruthhall@worldnet.att.net. Ruth's Soule family bulletin board has been located on Rootsweb for several years It currently has 178 subscribers who exchange information, queries and answers on family linage to George Soule. You can join this list by going to Soule-Lrequest@rootsweb,com. An explanation of how to subscribe, unsubscribe, or go to archives of these exchanges can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6431/Sksoulekindred/Rules.html Thanks To Early Renewers Treasurer Betty-Jean Haner sent out annual dues reminder notices to the membership in mid November. By the time she left upstate New York in early December to visit her sister, Peg Rocke, in Florida about half of our members had renewed. Thanks to all early birds for being so prompt! If you have overlooked Betty-Jean's notice, now is the time to act. New Life Members ,. Congratulations and thanks to Marcy Soule Kelly from Thousand Oaks, CA, Estella Cicero Anthony of East Hartford, CT amd Andrew B. Turner of Latrobe, PA, our most recent Life Members. Proceeds of Life Memberships are designated for future scholarships. Future Reunions Elsewhere in this issue, you will find preliminary information on our Year 2000 Reunion in California, hosted by Maria Elana Allstott. Midway between tours of New England and New York in the fall foliage season of the northeast, Maria and her husband stopped at our New Jersey home to get acquainted. She is energetic, imaginative, and well organized. My forecast is for a very successful summer meeting. Watch our web site for further information. A welcome development at our Lanark, IL meeting was an offer by Barbara Johnston and Carol Godreau to develop a longer range plan for annual meetings. The first phase is to help guide any person or family that would like to host a reunion but doesn't know where to start. Second, they volunteered to plan future meetings if no host comes forward. 3 SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETIER, VOL. XXXIV, NO. 1 JANUARY, 2000 Lanark attendees expressed support for the 2001 meeting being in Toronto, Canada and for the 2002 meeting being coordinated with the Mayflower Triennial Conference in Plymouth, MA. The feasability of the 2002 reunion being split between two New England locations is to be studied to minimize problems arising from the Plymouth area congestion when the Mayflower Conference is in session. Other desirable locations discussed were Savannah, GA, and New Orleans, LA. Are there Canadian Cousins willing to host a 2001 Toronto meeting with the help ofBarbara and Carol? Who else would like to attract a future meeting to their region? A survey of interested possible hosts and locations where members would like to meet is proposed for publication in the April issue of this newsletter. Indications of interest in being a host and opinions on desirable future meeting sites should be sent before March 15 to: Barbara Johnston by E-mail at >fussfoot@aol.com< or by mail to Carol Godreau at 33A Rita Drive, Bristol, CT 06010. 4 SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER, VOL. XXXIV, NO. 1 JANUARY, 2000 'Editor's Corner Happy New Year to all of us. I hope your holiday season has been satisfying and wonderful. Included in this quarter's edition of the newsletter are several items that usually appear in the annual January printing. Topping the list is the naming and briefbio's of this year's scholarship winners. Congratulations to these wonderful young people for their dedication to learning and their being chosen by the scholarship committee for these awards. They each appear to have done so much in life already, and their stated goals for the future are quite ambitious. Best wishes to each ofthem. Also printed in this edition is Jim Schlosser' s compilation ofthe annual index for the 1999 editions ofthe newsletter. This has not been a small task to accomplish, so kudos to Jim for a job well done. For those of us with a genealogical bent, the annual publishing of the index is invaluable. This is particularly true since the newsletter is subscribed to by a number of genealogical libraries and repositories, where a number of people have access to this information. I may have mentioned this before, but after more than 20 years of searching for a marriage record for my great-grandparents, information in a 1969 edition of the newsletter, found through searching the indexes, finally opened the door for me. Another key feature in this printing is information regarding the 2000 annual reunion in California. Maria Elana Allstott has already done a tremendous amount of work in organizing and preparing for the event. Hopefully, a good number of the kindred can make it this summer, especially as we have quite a few members residing out west. One last item, which has to do with costs associated with the printing of the newsletter. I have received conflicting feedback from several folks regarding the e-mail postings. Some people are quite pleased with their inclusion in the newsletter, especially those without computers who would otherwise miss out on some important genealogical and other family information. Others indicate that perhaps I should cut out printing some or all of them, thus saving space and some of the costs associated with printing the newsletter (extra number of pages based on their inclusion). I am amenable to doing that, especially since this is our and not simply my newsletter, but would like to hear from as many of you as possible as to how you feel about the issue. With regard to the increased cost of the newsletter over previous years, let me mention the following. Obviously, there has been some increase in cost due to the slight increase in the number of pages that were printed in 1999 compared to previous years. We published 224 pages this past year. The three previous years were 180, 218, and 192, however, so the difference is not that great. The more significant reason that the costs for printing the newsletter have gone up since I took over as editor a little over a year ago has in part to do with the cost of printing here in St. Louis. Our previous editor, Wit Soule, was fortunate to have found a printer in South Carolina whose costs were apparently quite a bit less than the going rate in most other places, including St. Louis. The other reason for the increase in cost has to do with the fact that the postal rates went up at the beginning of 1999 for bulk mailing such as we use with the newsletter. All told, the increase has, therefore, been consequential. I continue to look for a less expensive yet quality printer, so far without success. The postal rates, unfortunately, I can do nothing about. 5 SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER, VOL. XXXIV, NO. 1 JANUARY, 2000 Subj: RE: George Soule Date: 10/ 10/99 From: SharonV45@aol.com Hello Soule Cousins, Just received this message and thought that I would pass it along to all. I will bee-mailing this lady later. Sharon Subj: Fwd: FW: George Soule Date: 10113/99 From: SharonV45@aol.com Hi Sharon I was just browsing and suddenly decided to explore my husband's family name of'Soule". We visited the USA extensively last May and June ( 1998) and found the surname on the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC. We absolutely loved your country- one of our most favo urite countries in the world. We have no idea where the family originated, but that the family forename is George'.and both his grandfather, father and younger brother have been given the family name of'George Soule'. My daughter visited the UK some year's ago and found the name 'George Soule' on a rock at Plymouth UK where the Mayflower departed for the USA. The rock listed all the names of those travelling on the Mayflower. Researching in the USA we found that a 'George Soule' did indeed arrive on the Mayflower from the UK. We are the South African version of the name 'Soule' and would be very interested to find our 'roots'. Apparently, only one branch of the family arrived in Cape Town South Africa so it is an unusual name here. We gather that the family actually originally came from northern Spain and on our visit there next year, plan to do a bit of investigation as we read in the National Geographic a few years back that there is an area called 'Soule'. Our e-mail address at home in Cape Town, South Africa is: lsoule@yebo.co.za.. We are in our early 60's and would be most interested to hear from you and the branches of the names you may have been able to contact in the USA. Regards Maureen Soule Hi My mom forwarded your email to me. I am Gene van den Berg, my maiden name is Gene Soule. I am very interested in the congregation that the Soule's are having next year. When I was 18 years old (I am now 36) I lived in Plymouth, England for approximately 2 years. I saw that George Soule was the last on the list on the Plymouth Sound who travelled from Plymouth to New P lymouth. Please let me know more about the meeting next year. I would love to be there. Regards Gene (with an accent on the last e - french pronounciation) van den Berg (nee Soule) I married an Afrikaner. -----O riginal Message----From: SharonV45@aol.com Sent: II October 1999 To: SacChief@aol.com Subject: Re: George Soule Robert, I think you meant to send this to Maureen and sent to me instead, her address is: lsoule@yebo.co.za (Lionel & Maureen Soule) Hi,Maureen: Just a few notes to give you a quick summary on the Soules, as I'm sure you will soon get a lengthy reply from the hundreds (if not thousands) of "cousins" all over the world. Are you aware that there is a fami ly association called "Soule Kindred, inc."? They have an annual meeting, which in 2000 will be in Southern California; they give scholarships to descendants of george soule, who came to America on the Mayflower, and they publish a quarterly journal. I've never before heard the suggestion that the family came from Spain. Our best information is that george Soule came from Eckington,. England, about 12 miles from Worchestire. I was there 10 yrs ago and saw many family graves in two small churchyards, as well as the farm where the Soules lived and worked. I am a 12th generation direct descendant of Pilgrim George Soule; my branch of the family went from England to Massachusetts to New York to Michigan to California. My mother's maiden name was Soule and part of our line settled here in Sacramento,California circa 1876. The Soule Kindred also has a website, so I'm sure you'll soon be innundated with information. Mailing address for Soule Kindred is 53 New Shaker Rd, Albany, New York 12205-36 15. Dues for the association are only $15.00 U.S. per yr. The association has extensive family records. Have never been to S. Africa (only toN. Africa), but would like to get there someday. Robert E. Keldgord ************************************************ Subj: Delano Ancestry 10/ 17/99 Date: From: forrest@whidbey.com A recent posting to Soule-L included a descent for Philip Delano which included mention of a Lady someone and a descent from Jean II, King of France. I attach some notes from reputable publications which would refute such claims. Seems unlikely that a family of wool-combers has a traceable descent from the nobility. Bob Forrest (forrest@whidbey.com) TAG 53:172, "Some Delano Answers," Kerry William Bate: Based on research by B N Lever! and, adjunct archivist, Leyden. Cites two marriage records: I. 13 Jan 1596 Leyden: Jan Lano, bachelor from Torckangie, witnessed by Pierre de Bu and Gysbert Lano, the groom's father, and Marie Mahieu from Lyle, witnessed by Jane Mahieu her mother and her friend Anthonette North. 2. No date: Oliphier de Plaes from Demovau witnessed by Jaeckes de Plaes his brother, and Corn. du Pia, his good friend, and Margriete Lannoy from Tourcoy, witnessed by Sjan de Lanoy, her mother and Nowe de Lanoy, her sister. Claims that the grandfather of Phillip, Gysbert de Lannoy, was a son of Jean de Lannoy, a knight of the Golden Fleece, who was disinherited at the age of II for becoming a Protestant, are not correct. It is obvious that these people intermarried in several cases with wool-combers. "...we can safely place Jan Lano and Olivier do Pia among the Walloon textile-workers who emigrated to Holland." ... Date: 10118/99 From: EICHENTOP@aol.com AllI know this is the site used for posting things in regards to SOULE, but many of us know that MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS also tie in with other Mayflower lines. I hope I am not offending anyone by deterring for a bit. When we were doing roll call, somebody else also had a Ruth DELANO tie as me and that is where this originated. I am responding to another persons reply in regards to the Delano's descending from Jean II, King of France. Most of what I have found mentioned below has been found at my local library (in the genealogical section) in books about Royal Genealogy, Mayflower Families, Encyclopedia's and a couple from Mayflower online sites. I cannot tell you the exact books at present because I committed one of the big BOO BOOS .... I DID NOT BACK UP MY COMPUTER WHEN IT CRASHED.... I had written out names, dates and the likes ... and the stuff below was stuff I had printed for a study my daughter was doing in school, in other words, my notes, but not my references... He came to America to try to marry Pricilla Mullins who came to America on the Mayflower with her parents and brother. She had been in love with his older brother in Holland. When Pricilla's parents took her to America, Phillip's older brother married another so Philip decided to give it a try. Pricilla did not want any of his Flemish blood and married John A lden. Remember the story of Miles Standish asking John Alden to ask Prici lla if she would marry him (Miles). Pricilla said speak for yourself John and she married John. Phi lip went out and fought Indians for a few years during the Pequot Indian War. He had land granted to him in Duxbury, Mass in 1624, and he later moved to Bridgewater, Mass. Thirdly, he married Isabella of Portugal, daughter of Joao I, King of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster. Philip the Good succeeded his father, John the Fearless, as duke of Burgundy in I4 I 9 when John was assassinated in Montereau during a meeting with the frech dauphin (later King Charles VII). Philip passively supported the effort of the English king Henry V to usurp the French throne, but he avoided his father's deep involvement in French politics. Phippe's two predecessors had used diplomacy and dynastic marriages to extend Burgundian influence in the Low Countries, and Philip reaped the benefits of this policy. Already count of Flaners and Artois, Philip successively acquired Namur, Hainaut, Brabant, Holland, Zeeland, and Luxembourg between 1420 and 1443, employing considerable force to make good his claims. When he made peace with France in 1435, he obtained a strategic part ofPicardy. Famous for his patronage of chivalry and the arts, Philip founded the order of the Golden Fleece in 1430 and took a crusading vow at the sumtuous Feast of the Pheasant in 1454. His court reflected the splendor of the early northern Renaissance, and he was perhaps the most powerful ruler of his day. ************************************************ Subj: Steamship Sam Soule Date: I 0/28/99 From: SacChief@aol.com Recently, while examining some 1857 newspapers here in Sacramento, I found reference to the Steamship Sam Soule, operated by the California Steam navigation Company and which travelled between Sacramento and some smaller cities north ofhere on the Sacramento River. XXXIV, NO. 1 JANUARY, 2000 SOULE KINDRED INDEXES AVAILABLE A third index has been completed for about 1,000 persons who are descendants but do not have the name Soule or other spelling variations. This Surname Index was created primarily from lineages submitted recently by members of Soule Kindred. It should be used with our earlier indexes and the supplement published in the 1992 Soule Kindred Newsletter Summer edition (Volume XXVI, No.3). Also available are copies of the original index created by Dr. Milton Terry, listing more than 7,000 individuals with the name Soule, including codes for the source of information and a numbering system for tracing lineage of many individuals. That index includes the names of the spouse of about 5,000 of the individuals. Those spouse names have been indexed in alphabetic order with name and code number of the individual in the original Terry index. However, you must have the Terry index to use the spouse index. The cost of each of the three indexes is a standard $10.00, including mailing. They are printed on 8Y2 by 11 inch paper.
